Lately I have been spending enough time in NYC that I feel the need for a car. I have a history of owning old Mercedes, like W116's, W114's, and W123's. I would be interested in a beater W123 I could work on but basically anything else under five grand will do. I love old cars but if the car is too new I can't fix it. So look on the eBay's and the Craigslist!
I prefer wagons unless it is a very special sedan or a practical hatchback.
Update, I prefer a manual.

May I also recommend a car with an automatic or if it has to be a manual, one with a very light clutch for city driving. Traffic sucks ten times more when you are on and off a stiff clutch.

I prefer a manual but auto boxes are fine.

I do too ...just not in stop and go, bumper to bumper traffic on the BQE.
I would suggest (to no ones surprise) an e30. One of the early ones with big metal bumpers because they are great for parking in the city. The automatic ones can be picked up cheap but the stock manual is fairly light and easy too.

Used to working on Mercedes, how do BMW's fare? I have these grand dreams of having the car parked out front my house and working on it in the street. How are they to work on?

Boom, Turbo wagon.
if you can find one, and if you're willing to get a chip for it, this would be a perfect DD for you in NY (this specific one is in seattle so, no luck :/)

Having never worked on an old mercedes it would be hard to say how they compare. Most things in the engine bay are pretty accessible and it would be easy to do an oil change or a brake job on the street. BMW is (*was*) pretty good about thinking about making things easy for mechanics/owners.

The avant and Saab are sick. I would choose the Saab between the two. Mainly because there both automatics.

Manual wagons are really hard to find.
Here's something interesting, a 1990 Ford Taurus SHO manual

You can probably get a good-quality Volvo 240 for $5k.

I am actually leaning towards some kind of Volvo wagon of that era.
